New ChatGPT Search: What users think

When ChatGPT launched in 2022, there were many voices, both worried and amused, predicting that it meant real competition for Google.

Today, ChatGPT has over 200 million weekly users, so it's perhaps not surprising that OpenAI (the company behind ChatGPT) is ready for the next step. Now it's aiming to challenge Google itself - on its home turf.

As an SEO nerd, you can't help but dive right into this exciting development!

ChatGPT Search challenges Google

Recently releasede OpenAI ChatGPT Search. It's an AI-powered search engine that has many people raising their eyebrows. But the question is - can it really compete with the king of search engines, Google?

After digging into both studies and user reactions, I have to say that the answer is... well, complicated!

Because who would have thought that the inspiration seems to come not from Google, but from Bing! But it's actually not that strange, Microsoft owns Bing and they own 50% of ChatGPT (OpenAI). Many of us were surprised to discover that ChatGPT Search is actually more similar to Microsoft's Bing, with 73% of compliance, than Google with only 46%.

Bing, long overlooked by SEO specialists, what's in their search results that Google doesn't have?

Valuable strengths that beat Google

The Great Controllercan in ChatGPT Search seems to be the ability to summarise information in a good way and that it is completely free of advertising. Those are two advantages that it is easy to see attract many users.

Perhaps most excitingly, 26% of the sites that appear in ChatGPT Search don't even show up on Google - providing a whole new opportunity for smaller players to reach out. The question everyone wants answered now is how we use this mode to create business value for ourselves and our customers.

Where OpenAI needs to improve

But it is not bara gold and green forests. Sure, Chat GPT Search is superb at summarising information and completely free of advertising, but it still has a lot of teething problems to work out. In particular, when it comes to local searches, it lags far behind Google.

This new type of search is called SGE´O, Search Generative Experience Google's name for it is AI Overviews.

What do you think - will ChatGPT Search be able to seriously challenge Google, or will it remain just an interesting experiment? As someone who works with SEO on a daily basis, I see huge opportunities, but also real challenges that need to be overcome.

Executive summary

ChatGPT Search is a promising challenger to Google and their Ai Gemini, with unique strengths in summarising information and offering a reclutter-free interface. But it is not yet a full-fledged contender. Local searches need improvement

The main points:

  • ChatGPT Search provides new opportunities for smaller sites to be visible, as 26% of its results come from domains that do not rank on Google.
  • Surprisingly, the tool is more similar to Bing than Google in its search results. However, this may not be surprising as Microsoft, which is part owner of ChatGPT and owns Bing and the AI tool Copilot
